Observation Narrative
This very lush forest occupies the lower slopes bordering the Potomac River floodplain in Turkey Run Park. This plot captures a variant in which Acer saccharum, normally a dominant tree in this vegetation, is absent (see also plot TURK001, located about 100 m to the north). Here, the overstory is a mixture of tall, well-formed Liriodendron tulipifera, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana, Fagus grandifolia, and Quercus muhlenbergii, the latter a rather uncommon tree in this area. Ulmus rubra, Asimina triloba, Lindera benzoin, and Staphylea trifolia are common in the small tree and shrub layers. The herbaceous flora is exceedingly dense and lush, but the exotics Alliaria petiolata and Veronica hederifolia are the two most abundant species.
